Topological defects, inherent structures, and hyperuniformity

A wide spectrum of disordered many-body systems that are inherent structures (i.e., local minima potential energy landscape) was recently discovered to possess a novel hidden long-range order known as hyperuniformity, yet the mechanisms associated with emergence hyperuniformity in such not well understood. Here, we address this important fundamental problem by linking together concepts topological defects, structures, and hyperuniformity. We consider representative examples variants crystals obtained continuously introducing into crystalline state randomly distributed defects dislocations disclinations. Using large-scale numerical simulations analysis based on continuum theory, show transformation pathways preserve latter, long displacements induced sufficiently localized volume integrals squared caused individual defect finite) displacement-displacement correlation matrix system is diagonalized isotropic. Our results provide insights discovery, design, generation hyperuniform materials.
